Mountain Biking on Catalina

There are about 40 miles of trails and mostly unpaved roads on Catalina Island Conservancy wilderness lands that are open to mountain bikers.

Rules for Catalina Mountain Bikers
Mountain bikes with all terrain knobby tires are required. Riders must wear helmets that meet the safety standards set by either the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) or Snell Memorial Foundation.

All bikers musty wear hard shell helmets. Mountain bikes with multiple gears and all terrain-tires are highly recommended.

Mountain Biking the Trans-Catalina Trail
Bikes are allowed on only about eight miles of the Trans-Catalina Trail that traverses the island: SECTION OPEN TO BIKERS: Along Renton Mine Road, East End Road, and Divide Road to Dakin Peak where the microwave tower is located on the east end of the island.

This Catalina Island map for mountain bikers includes the elevation changes and slopes of the island's mountain biking routes. Includes indicators of zero to two percent slopes, 2 to 4 percent slopes, 4 to 6 percent slopes, 6 to 8 percent slopes, and slopes greater than 8 percent.

Freewheeler Bike Pass

FROM THE CATALINA ISLAND CONSERVANCY:
"To bike in the wildlands of Catalina a Freewheeler Bike Pass is required, and is available through the purchase of a Conservancy membership starting at $35 level. Bring your membership receipt with you to any of the Conservancy's locations where you will be issued a permit placard that goes on your bike."
