Grass Valley Gold Mines

Empire Mine State Historic Park
Oldest, largest, and richest gold mine in california. produced 5.8 million ounces of gold between 1850 and 1956. Several public tours are available including a mineyard tour, a cottage grounds tour, and a garden tour. An underground mine tour is planned for the future. The 845 acre park also features about 14 miles of hiking trails that can accommodate hikers, mountain bikes, and horseback riding. The Empire Mine is California Historic Landmark #298. Located at 10791 East Empire Street in Grass Valley.

North Star Mine
This former gold mine was the second largest producer of gold during California's gold rush period. Located just south of Grass Valley, on Lafayette Hill and Weimar Hill. After World War II the North Star Mine was consolidated with the Empire Mine. Resources and historic Sites related to the North Star Mine include:

Quartz Gold Discovery Monument
Marks the spot where George McKnight found a piece of gold-bearing quartz rock that led to the establishment of the Gold Hill Quartz Mine in 1850. California Historic Landmark #297 is located on top of Gold Hill, at the southwest corner of on Jenkins Street and Hocking Avenue in Grass Valley.
