California Powder Works History of Hercules
The community of Hercules began in 1881 as a company town
for California Powder Works, a company that produced
the explosive black powder known aas dynamite or TNT. In the 1960's
the company transitioned from producing TNT to producing
fertilizer. That plant was sold to Valley Fertilizer in 1976
and it closed permanently in 1977.
