Wineries in the Temecula Valley

s Temecula's wine country is located about two hours east of Los Angeles and about one hour north of San Diego. rhe area is especially well suited growing growing grapes such Syrah, Grenache, and Sangiovese, although it is too hot for other grapes, such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Most of the wineries in temecula are situated on Rancho California Road. Temecula's grapes are typically harvested from mid-august to September but winery tours and wine tastings are available year round. Temecula's wineries were developed in the 1960's by commercial land developers to attract buyers to the subdivisions they were building.

Alex's Red Barn Winery
This winery for the 25 acre Yakut Estate Vineyards is operated by Alex and Lise Yakut. Wines include a Sauvignon Blanc, a Cabernet Sauvignon, a Johannisberg Riesling, a Solera style Sherry, a Muscat Canelli, a Viognier, and a Syrah. Located at 39820 Calle Contento in Temecula. Phone: 951-693-3201.

Vineyards were first planted in 1969. Ownership changed hands in late 2005. Ely Callaway founded the winery before he moved on to develop his golf club empire. After him it was owned y Allied Domecq, whoc owned it for about 12 years before selling it to a Del Mar based investment partnership around 2005.

Churon Winery
This winery in a French style schateau specializes in Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc. Operates a bed and breakfast inn on the property.

Most well-known for their Syrah and Sangiovese wines. The grounds are not as ornately landscaped as some of the other Temecula vineyards. In November of 2006 Peter Poole, the son of Mount Palomar Winery founder John Poole, announced he would seel the winery which hsi father founde din the e3arly 1970's.

Thornton family sold it in late 2006 or early 2007 Was the 4th Temecula valley vineyard to be sold between april 2004 and dec 2006). Thornton was founded by Martha and John Culbertson in the early 1980's as "Culbertson's Winery". At the time They already owned their winery in Fallbrook. John Thornton was a key invester and he tooko over the winery's operations in the nid 1980's, and gave it his faily's name (the Culbertson family also sold their Fallbrook winery but they still lvie i the area.
